Most of Build IT International’s work takes place in Zambia. Why? Because it is one of the world’s poorest countries and ranks 165th out of 177 on the Human Development Index. Two thirds of the 11 million Zambians live below the poverty line and unemployment is at least 50% – there is a massive need for skills and jobs.
Whilst conditions have improved in Zambia over the past few years, much more needs to be done to eliminate poverty. This includes providing the basic infrastructure required to support vital services and economic activities; health posts, feeder roads, grain stores and affordable housing especially in informal slum settlements.
Zambia is a safe and stable country – somewhere, you can things done. And, we have strong links there with local organisations through our staff and trustee contacts.
What’s more, our research in 2007 revealed that there was nobody else pursuing a livelihoods approach to providing basic buildings.
So it’s an ideal place for us to work!
Beyond Zambia, we are able to provide support to other development organisations interested in our approach. We have done this in Ethiopia, Malawi and Liberia. Perhaps we can assist your project?
Finally, one of our strategic objectives is to open a second country programme in southern Africa by 2012.
