Kawama is a poor per-urban community in Ndola, a mining town on the Copperbelt. Community organisation KWOP provides schooling and feeding for under-fives, but the real obstacle to dealing with poverty is the lack of work opportunities, especially for young adults. In 2008 the COINS foundation decided to support the community with an extension to the community school by building 2 new classrooms, a resource centre and an office.
COINS contracted Build IT International to deliver the project using our unique training approach. Work on Kawama school started in Jan 09. The foundations were laid June 09 and scheduled to fully complete the building by October 2010.
As well as building an impressive community facility, all 16 trainees passed their trades test exams and gained a further three months valuable work experience on the project. A building materials business will now be set up at Kawama.
