Fiwila is a remote community in Central Zambia, located 50km down a dirt road. After our first project at Fiwlia, Phase 1, we began another phase of the building work and created a 2 x laboratory block, ablution block and teacher’s house.
Description: New Secondary School – Phase 2 – 2 x laboratory block, ablution block and teacher’s house with rainwater tank
Key Features: Parry roof tiles made on site. Extra strong corner columns, rain-water harvesting.
When Built: 2008 11 months project
Builder: Alfred Muyabe – 4 more tile makers trained
Cost: £35, 000
Funder: Shropshire Fiwila Partnership
Result: With one short rainy season, water can be a problem for many in rural Zambia. We used this project to trial the use of curved soil blocks in the construction of a 10 cu.m. This was a success technically but proved to be uneconomical. In drier areas where water is more expensive, there may be a market for the tank.
